Judge Rodney Gilstrap
Chief Judge Rodney Gilstrap was confirmed to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in December 2011. He was rated as Unanimously Qualified by the American Bar Association before his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He became Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Texas on March 1, 2018.
Judge Gilstrap presides over one of the largest and most active civil trial dockets in the nation, including major patent and other IP litigation, products liability and PI cases, employment litigation, and commercial and antitrust cases. According to many sources, including Lex Machina, Judge Gilstrap has been the “busiest patent judge” in the nation, hearing the most patent cases in the country. For example, in 2015 he was ranked nationally as the federal judge presiding over the highest number of filed cases, the highest number of litigants, and the highest number of accusations, and in 2016, Judge Gilstrap saw more new cases than the next 10 highest ranking judges.
In 2018, the Texas Chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocacy honored Judge Gilstrap as the 2018 Jurist of the Year, and Baylor Law School named him as the 2018 Baylor Lawyer of the Year.
